"Loveliest of Trees, the Cherry Now"


To see all the cherry trees in bloom takes, me back to about 3rd grade when we had to learn this piece of poetry by A.E. Housman, write it, and illustrate it, in our note books.




Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.

How very very lovely. It will be a few more months before we are enjoying cherry blossoms in my neck of the woods. :-)

Actually, by the hue and cast of the blossoms, those look more like flowering plums, some of which are blooming on my block as I write.

What a lovely poem. Keewee, I told JW that there is a state law in Washington that I can not leave Seattle until I have rode the ferry to Whidbey Island. Then and only then will I be allowed to travel out of the state to return to Montana!! Yeah, I think that's a great law!
